FCF's Very Own Olympian

Jo in the Flying Lap – World Championships, Melbourne Australia

All,

I am very proud to announce Foundation CrossFit’s newest Olympian! Jo has been named to the 2012 New Zealand Olympic Team to compete in London this summer. New Zealand selected 5 women and 9 men to represent them in track cycling. This will be Jo’s 3rd Olympic competition but the first on the track. She competed in the road race in Athens and Beijing. After Beijing she made the decision to switch her focus to the track and the Omnium which is a brand new event for the London Games.

It is the Decathlon of cycling - 6 different events over two days lowest sum of all the placings wins. The events are:
  1. Flying lap. Timed event, one rider at a time, one lap around the track with a rolling start.
  2. Points race. 80 laps, all competitors on track at once, sprint every 10 laps for points 5,3,2,1. 20 points for lapping the field. Highest points total wins.
  3. Elimination race. Also called the “Devil” which is short for “devil take the hindmost”. All riders on the track at once, every other lap the last rider across the line is removed until there is only one left – the winner. (Jo’s specialty)
  4. 3,000 meter pursuit. Timed event. One rider on each side of track, ride 3,000 meters (12 laps) from a standing start for time.
  5. Scratch race. 40 laps, all competitors on track at once, first one across the line wins.
  6. 500 meter time trial. Timed event, one rider on each side of track, ride 500 meters from a standing start for time, lowest time wins.
Jo finished 7th in the Omnium at the 2012 World Championships a few weeks ago in Melbourne advancing a couple of places from last year’s 9th. After a slow start with a not so great flying lap she was in the position of playing catch up for the rest of the competition but she rode strong from that point on and even had PB in the very last event - the 500 meter Time Trial. She left some room for improvement so it will be exciting to see where she comes out this summer in London.

Jo will even be in Seattle training for a couple of weeks this month after 6 months abroad. Lifting and CrossFit will certainly be a part of that training so if you see her in there be sure to push her extra hard!
84 days to go – need to make every single one count!

Cheers,

Jeff P.

The Whole30 Program

A group of athletes will be participating in the Whole30 Program starting January 16th (next Monday) for 30 days by getting real by eating real fresh food: Meat, seafood, eggs, tons of vegetables, some fruit, and plenty of good fats from fruits, fats, oils, nuts, and seeds.

Sound a bit familiar?

Whole30 has based their idea of real food off of the Paleo diet but have put more focus on real foods by mainly avoiding replicating junk food with "technically approved" ingredients (i.e. Paleo "pizza", Paleo cookies, desserts etc). There is no gray area with Whole30. It is a very strict program designed to give results within 30 days so it can certainly be considered a "cleanse" for our bodies. It is a tool for us to learn what exactly we are nourishing our bodies with the food choices we make everyday.

From Whole9Life:

"The first week or two will be tough, as your body heals and adjusts to this new way of eating and your brain wraps itself around going without all those sweet tastes and sugar-driven energy spikes. And while you may start to feel better after a week or two… the healing process takes significantly longer. In addition, the mental addiction and emotional connections to sugary foods, large amounts of carbohydrates and over-the-top, chemically-altered flavors is going to take a lot longer to overcome.

Stick with it, and be patient with yourself. You cannot reasonably expect to completely reverse decades of poor eating habits in just 30 days. The good news, however, is that improvements are front-loaded, and you will start to see significant benefits within the month.

At some point, we promise you… the magic will happen. You’ll go to sleep easier, and sleep more soundly through the night. Your energy levels will increase and stabilize, and you’ll feel just as good first thing in the morning as you do at the peak of your day. Your body composition will start to change – your clothes will fit differently, and you’ll feel less bloated at the end of your day. Your performance, whether it be in the gym, while playing sports or during a hike, will improve. Your recovery after exercise, a game or a hard day’s work will feel easier and more complete. Conditions, ailments, aches and pains will miraculously start to improve. And through all of it, you’ll be eating delicious, fresh, natural, real food… food that tastes good, and is physically satiating and mentally satisfying."

If you're interested, please email sheena@foundationcrossfit.com for more information. There is a private Google Group where there will be support for one another as well as sharing resources, recipes, and insight as we all take on the Whole30 program.

This is a time to make some significant change in your life- especially in the areas we mentioned yesterday: sleep,

Future of Health: Gary Taubes: "Why We Get Fat"

"There’s a host of fast-accruing science around obesity, and in his new work, Why We Get Fat, Gary Taubes helps separate the bad from the good. In his earlier bestseller Good Calories, Bad Calories, Taubes argues that certain kinds of carbohydrates have led to our obesity epidemic; he also addresses the most damaging nutritional science of the last century (the “calories-in, calories-out” model), the good science we’ve ignored (insulin’s regulation of fat tissue), and lands with a set of easy-to-follow dietary recommendations."

If you don't catch him in person, there are always the videos we just posted!

CrossFit in the Seattle Times

The northwest represent!

CrossFit becomes an international fitness phenom with its brutal online workouts

...

And there's Andrew Bueno. He recently opened his own CrossFit affiliate gym on Capitol Hill, but he was a personal trainer at Gold's Gym when he fell in love with it. Setting out to lure new clients, he began using his lunch breaks as a sort of demonstration project.

"I would do my CrossFit workout to almost show off. It was almost like, drop your jaw in amazement as I do these kettlebell swings," he recalls. "I would start grunting. You're seeing this amazing sweat going on. Then I'm lying on the ground, steaming, gasping for air.

"Some people were like, 'That looks brutal. Can I try?' "

CROSSFIT, IT should be clear by now, can be habit-forming. Even though the WODs usually take less than 20 minutes, there is a tendency for mission-creep. Afficionados spend hours studying the Web site. They post their WOD stats and compete — virtually — with other users.

Be sure to leave some comments on the online article. Print edition comes out this Sunday! Pick some up and start showing them off to everyone.
